Arthur Russell - A Little Lost
//
Max made my mind asplode this weekend by introducing me to Arthur Russell. Russell was a criminally under-appreciated musician from the 80’s who died in 1992 but has really only started to gain recognition over the last few years.
My favorite disco record has long been Is It All Over My Face by Loose Joints. Honestly, if you’ve never heard it, go check it out on YouTube now. Heck, even if you already know the song it’s worth your time to give it another go especially as that video has both the male and female versions.
So what does that have to do with Russell? This was what blew my mind: Loose Joints was basically Arthur Russell. The man made some amazing disco tunes under various aliases. But that was just the beginning.
Listening to A Little Lost, you can begin to understand that Russell was so much more than just disco. Even though this song is from the 80’s it sounds extremely contemporary. I mean, Antony Hegarty seems to have based most of his output on Russell.
Anyway, enough of my blathering. If either of these songs have even remotely piqued your interest, you owe it to yourself to check out The World of Arthur Russell ASAP.
